As PNP opts to dismiss nine of 12 policemen in Jolo shooting, DND and AFP welcome the move

DND, AFP welcome the dismissal of police personnel in Sulu shooting


MANILA – Defense Secretary Delfin N. Lorenzana said he welcomes the dismissal of nine of 12 police elements involved in the shooting incident last June 29, 2020 in Jolo, Sulu.


“We welcome General Debold Sinas’s approval of the dismissal of the nine police officers involved in the shooting incident in Jolo, Sulu on 29 June 2020, which led to the deaths of Philippine Army officers and soldiers, Secretary Lorenzana said in a statement.


In a related development, Major General Edgard Arevalo, AFP Spokesperson said the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) considers the dismissal from the service of nine of 12 PNP personnel for their participation in the shooting incident which claimed the lives of four AFP intelligence personnel, two of them officers.


In a statement, General Arevalo said they understand the punishment accorded the policemen is an administrative penalty.


“We are one with the families of our slain soldiers in their quest for the filing of criminal charges against said members of Jolo Police,” General Arevalo said.


He assured everyone they will monitor “unceasingly” the development in this case as they will ensure justice is served for the hapless victims who were killed in actual performance of their duty.


“While we are optimistic that appropriate penalties will be meted on the perpetrators, we hope that necessary measures will be instituted by the PNP to prevent the incident from happening again,” Arevalo concluded. (Melo M. Acuña)
