Strong quake hits Southern Philippines; no damages expected

Magnitude 7.1 quake hits Southern Philippines


MANILA – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported a strong earthquake at 8:23 P.M., Thursday, some 231 kilometers east of Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, near the Philippine trench.


It was of tectonic origin which was traced at the depth of 116 kilometers. The quake was felt in General Santos City with Intensity V, Davao City at Intensity IV, Intensity II at Bislig City in Surigao del Sur.


It was felt as far as Catbalogan, Samar with Intensity I.


The earthquake is not expected to cause damage. Phivolcs warned of aftershocks. (Melo M. Acuña)
