37th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits to begin tomorrow

President Duterte to participate in the 37th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte will join other regional leaders for the 37th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits through a virtual conference beginning tomorrow until Sunday (November 12-15,2020).

Viet Nam will chair this year’s summit with the theme “Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN.”

In a statement released by the Office of the President early Wednesday evening, President Duterte is expected to exchange views with his counterparts on matters of regional concern related to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) response and recovery efforts, future direction of ASEAN community building, and regional and international developments.

President Duterte will push the country’s position on public health emergencies cooperation, regional economic integration, migrant workers’ rights, climate change, disaster risk reduction management, counter-terrorism, and the South China Sea issue.

Malacanang said they expect more than 10 outcome documents will be adopted during the four-day summit underscoring ASEAN cooperation on COVID-19, enhancing for public health emergencies as well as updates on ASEAN community-building efforts.

Expected to join President Duterte are Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr., Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon M. Lopez and Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rolando Joselito Delizo Bautista.

This is the third virtual summit where President Duterte will attend along with his fellow ASEAN leaders this year. The first was the Special ASEAN Summit on COVID-19 held last April while the second was during the 36th ASEAN Summit, hosted by Viet Nam last June. (Melo M. Acuña)
