DA supports programs to revive country’s economy

MANILA – Agriculture Secretary William D. Dar said being part of the Economic Development Cluster of President Rodrigo Duterte’s cabinet, strongly supports the five-point economic measures proposed by Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III to revive the Philippine economy after the COVID-19 pandemic affected almost every program,.

“Our role at the Department of Agriculture is highlighted as two of the five measures involve food production and logistics,” said Secretary Dar in a statement.

It was earlier reported Secretary Dominguez said the manufacture of products that have strong and inelastic demand including food should be increased and fresh food items should be stored efficiently for longer shelf lives.

Secretary Dar said Secretary Dominguez has recognized the Department of Agriculture’s efforts to incrase the production of adequate and nutritious food in a cost-efficient manner as well as the establishment of the required postharvest and storage facilities.

Secretary Dominguez made the proposal last May 11 meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte and other IATF-MEID members in Malacanang.

The top Agriculture official said the establishment of the whole value chain for food products and food markets for efficient distribution which is similar to the fruit and vegetable markets in Japan.

It will be recalled Secretary Dominguez served as Agriculture secretary during President Corazon C. Aquino’s term during the late 1980s.

Secretary Dar said more than 340 local government units bought P1.9-billion worth of agri-fishery produce from farmers and fishermen across the country since the COVID-19 pandemic began. (Melo M. Acuña)
