Police elements in pursuit of armed men in Sorsogon
MANILA – Policemen scheduled to undergo COVID-19 screening at the Regional Headquarters in Legazpi City were ambushed by undetermined number of armed personnel believed to be members of the outlawed New People’s Army.
They were aboard a PNP Special Action Force truck from their camp in Sorsogon province when waylaid.
Bicol PNP Spokesperson Major Malou Calubaquib said the armed men detonated two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and injured a policeman and three bystanders at the Daang Maharlika/National Highway at Barangay Putiao in Pilar town, Sorsogon province at 7:30 A.M. today.
Police Corporal Jeffrey Enconge Putian sustained minor injuries while the three other non-combatants were brought to the nearest medical facility for emergency treatment.
The eleven members of the 92ng Special Action Company retaliated and engaged the armed group in a firefight for five minutes.The civilians suffered shrapnel wounds.Pursuit operations are still going on as of this writing.(Melo M. Acuna)
