Auto sales up in July

MANILA – Car and truck sales for July 2020 rose by 31.9 % with 20,542 units from 15,578 units last June according to a joint report by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers Association (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA).

CAMPI President Atty. Rommel Gutierrez said it is understandable that achieving the industry’s average monthly pre-COVID-19 level remains elusive and has been a continuing challenge at the same time amid this pandemic and the recent pronouncement of economic recession.

Atty. Gutierrez remains optimistic with the increase in the month-on-month of nearly 32%, they would be able to achieve their target of 240,000 units this year. The sales volume reduction target is equivalent to 41.5% decrease compared with the total industry sales volume recorded a year ago.

“This volume reduction can have serious operation and financial impact on the automotive industry, We have submitted some recommendations for industry support, which are now under study by the DTI,” he further said.

He explained the industry is doing everything it could to provide sales promotions to encourage customers despite stricter community quarantine this month. He added they ensure everyone all safety measures are strictly observed to protect both their costumers and front liners.

The industry sales fell by 35.4% year-on-year from 31,810 units sold in July last year.

The automotive industry has sold 105,583 units on year-to-date with 48.7% decline compared with the same period a year ago. (Melo M. Acuña)
