Batangas State University gets PH’s first technology park status

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte recently signed Proclamation No. 947 designating Batangas State University as the country’s first Knowledge, Innovation and Science Technology (KIST) Park after the Department of Trade and Industry forwarded its recommendation

In a statement, Batangas State University said the registration was signed by Philippine Economic Zone Authority Director General Charito Plaza and University President Tirso Ronquillo last week.

The country’s first KIST Park registered by PEZA, the economic zone will allow academic institutions to lease a portion of their property to business locators to boost the expected dynamic collaboration in technological innovation and entrepreneurship.

Up for launching on July 20, the Batangas State University KIST Park hopes to create a space for tech start-ups and facilitate the transfer of the university’s expertise to locator companies. The locators will benefit from tax holidays and other non-fiscal benefits aside from high-value intellectual capital and physical resources of the University.

The KIST Park hopes to promote industrial Research and Development, draw foreign investments and accelerate the country’s transition from a labor-intensive economy to a knowledge-intensive endeavor.

Batangas State University is a Level IV state university in the CALABARZON region, and remains the only State University and College accredited by the US Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for its Engineering and Information Technology programs. (Melo M. Acuña)
