Unabated mining and quarrying may cause disasters to Cagayan residents

MANILA – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) warned unabated, persistent mining and quarrying in unstable areas may lead to tragic incidents in low-lying villages and siltation within the Cagayan river.

In a statement, the DENR quoted Undersecretary Jonas R. Leones said they are assessing alternative areas for legal quarry and mining operators in Region II which has suffered from severe flooding.

He said they want to avoid unstable areas because it will lead to silt and sediments and may lead to catastrophes.

During an interview with PCOO Secretary Martin M. Andanar, Undersecretary Leones said after a thorough assessment, only legit operators will be allowed.
