Malacañang condoles with Fr. Joaquin Bernas’ friends and associates
MANILA – Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque extended Malacañang’s condolences to the friends and colleagues of the late legal luminary Fr. Joaquin Bernas, the Jesuit member of the 1987 Constitutional Commission who passed away earlier today.
In a statement, Secretary Roque cited Fr. Bernas’ accomplishments, among them being Dean Emeritus of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law who “left a legacy of legal excellence and passion for humanity and the rule of law to the nation.” He was also credited for being a “great Jesuit educator” having mentored generations of Filipino students, lawyers, legal academics and researchers.
“A noted constitutionalist, Fr. Bernas was one of the framers of the 1987 Philippine Constitution whose interpretation of the law had been cited in numerous legal arguments,” the statement added. (Melo M. Acuña)
