Girder mishap results in death to one, injuries to several others
MANILA – A span of steel girder fell along East Service Road shortly before 9:00 A.M. at Barangay Cupang in Muntinlupa City.
In a report from the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), one Enrico Navora Gregorio was in the process of maneuvering his crawler crane when it lost balance and fell hitting the vehicles during the weekend morning traffic.
A Hyundai utility van with two passengers was hit along with a Mitsubishi Adventure with two passengers, a Toyota Vios taxi with its driver, and four other motorcycles were hit by the girder. A motorcycle rider was reported to have died on the spot. The utility van and the Mitsubishi Asian Utility Vehicle (AUV) were totally damaged. The four passengers were rushed to Asian Hospital for emergency treatment.
Ambulances from Muntinlupa City Government and Engineering Equipment Inc. attended to the victims while Gregorio was brought to Bicutan PNP-HPG for investigation. The girder was removed after a few hours.
In their separate statements, San Miguel Corporation and EEI said initial assessment revealed the crane owned by EEI fell as it was being moved to its next position, hitting the steel girder, which caused it to fall.
San Miguel Corporation reported six vehicles were damaged as they are closely monitoring the situation.
“We deeply regret this unfortunate accident and assure a full and thorough investigation. Our thoughts and concern are with the victims and we will make sure they will get all the help they need. Their welfare is our priority,” the SMC said.
With the incident, the completion of the Skyway Extension Project will be delayed from December 2020 to February 2021.
Meanwhile, EEI said they will review their safety and operating protocols related to their strategic infrastructure projects.
This is the second girder incident that fell on a busy road. It will be recalled a girder launcher used in the construction of NAIA Expressway fell to the ground at 3:32 P.M.
on March 23,2015. The incident brought much inconvenience for departing passengers bound for NAIA terminals.
Then MMDA Chairman (now Senator) Francis Tolentino was quoted saying the contractor, DMCI “needs to look for a replacement for the fallen girder launcher.”
