Coast Guard commandant promoted to Admiral
MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte promoted Philippine Coast Guard Commandant to Admiral, the highest rank of a PCG commissioned officer.
Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade recommended the promotion of Vice Admiral George Villareal Ursabia, Jr. to Admiral to President Duterte early last month. The promotion took effect last July 6 and his formal oath-taking at Malacanang Palace will soon take place.
Admiral Ursabia extended his sincere gratitude for the promotion to President Duterte and Secretary Tugade. He also acknowledged the blessings form the Almighty which constantly reminds him of the importance of his mandate to fulfill his motto of “Saving Lives.”
He began his military career in 1983 when he entered the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) and graduated as a member of “Hinirang” Class of 1987.
He took his graduate studies and acquired his Master of Science in Maritime Safety and Environmental Protection on scholarship at Sasakawa Foundation in Japan and acquired another graduate degree from the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden in 1999.
Before his appointment as PCG Commandant, Admiral Ursabia was commander of the PCG-Marine Environmental Protection Command, Commander of the Coast Guard Districts in Central Visayas, Palawan, Southeastern Mindanao and Northern Luzon. He was Commander of the Coast Guard Ready Force and Staff for Maritime Safety Affairs.
He received a number of decorations and awards as PCG officer.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he activated the PCG Task Force Oplan Bayanihan to serve returning overseas Filipinos, repatriation Filipino seafarers, locally stranded individuals, government agencies, local government units and maritime stakeholders.
He also initiated the bi-monthly swab tests and strategic deployment schedule and ensured the sufficient supply of vitamins, medical supplies, Personal Protective Equipment and other resources for PCG personnel. He likewise directed the recruitment of additional health workers to expand the Command’s capacity to serve sans compromising the welfare of PCG front liners.
