13th Global Forum on Migration opens

Philippines joins Migration and Development Forum


MANILA – A top-level delegation joined the opening ceremony of the 13th Global Forum on Migration and Development Summit today. The mission hopes to further protect the rights and promote the welfare of Filipinos overseas despite the COVID-19 pandemic.


The delegation was chaired by Chief of Presidential Protocol and Presidential Assistant on Foreign Affairs Robert E. A. Borje, Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Sarah Lou Ysmael Arriola and Commission on Filipinos Overseas Undersecretary Astravel Pimentel Naik.


United Arab Emirates Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, Thani Juma Al Hamli opened the summit while the Foreign Minister of Ecuador and ranking officials of the International Organization for Migration, European Commission, African Union Commission, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Organization of American States delivered their respective remarks.


The gathering’s theme, “The Future of Human Mobility: Innovative Partnerships for Sustainable Development,” is hosted by the UAE and will include a series of roundtables, workshops, side events and other activities centered on migration policy and governance and will end on Tuesday, August 26,2021.


The Philippines is scheduled to co-chair of six Summit Roundtables, Roundtable 2 on Skilling Migrants for Employment with Undersecretary Borje and the United Kingdom on Thursday, January 21 and Roundtable 3 about Leveraging New Technologies to Empower Migrants with Undersecretary Arriola and Kenya on Wednesday, January 20.


The other Filipino officials attending the 13th Global Forum are representatives from the Office of the President, Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Labor and Employment, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Commission on Filipinos Overseas, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, National Economic and Development Authority, and the Department of Health.
