President Duterte receives Filipino Olympians
MANILA – The victorious Philippine boxing team paid their virtual courtesy call upon arrival from Tokyo, Japan on President Rodrigo Duterte who was in Malacañang.
The Chief Executive announced his office will grant cash incentives to the athletes in the Tokyo Olympics in addition to the incentives given by the state under the existing law. The law provides P5 million for silver medalists and P 2 million for bronze medalists.
“it is not an everyday occurrence that we receive such an honor from our citizens of the Republic of the Philippines,” President Duterte said during the virtual courtesy call of the Filipino boxers.
He said the athletes went to Tokyo to fight and the athletes did their best, which was appreciated by the Filipino people.
The team is composed of Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, Eumir Marcial and Irish Magno. It will be recalled the boxers earned three medals in different weight categories.
Boxers Petecio (women’s featherweight) and Paalam (men’s flyweight) ended their Olympic campaigns with silver medals while Marcial secured the bronze medal in the men’s middleweight division.
President Duterte said both Petecio and Paalam will receive additional P 2 million each from the Office of the President. Marcial will receive an additional 1 million while Irish Magno will be given P200,000.
All Filipino athletes who competed at the Tokyo Olympics will receive P200,000 from the Office of the President. (Melo M. Acuña)
