Department of Foreign Affairs welcomes UN Security Council’s backing of ASEAN on Myanmar

MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) today welcomed the UN Security Council’s “strong support for ASEAN’s positive and constructive role in facilitating a peaceful solution in support of the people of Myanmar” which recognized the Council’s call for the “release of all those arbitrarily detained, including State Counsellor Aung San Syy Kyi and President Win Myint”.

The DFA said it supports the work of Ms. Christine Schraner Burgener, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar.

ASEAN Chair Erywan Pehin Yusof of Brunei Darussalam briefed the Council on the results of the recently-concluded ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on Myanmar. The Members of the Council welcomed the gathering of ASEAN Leaders last April 24,2021 in Jakarta as well as the Chairman’s Statement and the “Five-Point Consensus.”

Ms. Burgener also briefed the Council. The Members of the Council underlined their full support for the work of the Special Envoy and welcomed her continuing visit to the region. They encouraged complementarity of her work to the work of ASEAN, and hoped she would visit Myanmar at the soonest possible time.
