Thousands flee to evacuation centers

Monsoon rains affect six regions, send thousands to evacuation centers


MANILA – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) today reported 212 barangays have been affected by continuous rains from the southwest monsoon enhanced by a passing typhoon.


The rains affected some 19,521 families composed of some 87,493 persons. The NDRRMC reports disclosed 22,693 persons from 5,554 families have taken shelter in 157 evacuation centers spread across Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, Cordillera Administrative Region and Metro Manila.


However, 510 families with 2,105 persons opted to stay with relatives and other friends outside the government provided temporary billeting.


Typhoon “Fabian” has already left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).


Meanwhile, a 39-year-old female was reported to have died when the vehicle she was in was hit by a fallen tree. She was declared dead on arrival at the nearest hospital in Baguio City. Two males, a 35-year-old and a 15-year-old were reported hit by lightning strike in Tartarabang, Pinili, Ilocos Norte. Three others were reported injured from the same lightning strike. Another 63-year-old male was injured when the vehicle he was in was hit by a falling tree.
